Bronte was named after Robert Lowe's home, Bronte House, which in turn was named in honour of Lord Nelson, Duke of Bronte. Lord Nelson was created Duke of Bronte by the King of Naples in 1799. Lowe, a distant relative of Gov. Gipps, bought a strip of beach frontage here in the 1830s and built Bronte House. 

Bronte has an important surfing culture. The Bronte Surf Lifesaving Club was founded in 1903 and claims to be the oldest surf lifesaving club in the world. An annual long-distance ocean swimming event is held in December each year between Bondi Beach and Bronte.
