DARLINGHURST, an inner-eastern locality of Sydney, stands as a testament to the city’s multifaceted and ever-evolving character. Just 2 kilometres from the CBD, it is bordered by Potts Point, Elizabeth Bay, Rushcutters Bay. With its rich history, Kings Cross has become a neighbourhood where heritage and modernity intertwine, known both for its vibrant nightlife and gritty past. Once celebrated for its grand theatres and music halls, the area underwent significant changes after World War II, becoming Sydney’s iconic red-light district. The influx of returning soldiers from the nearby Garden Island naval base, combined with the rising popularity of nightlife, transformed Kings Cross into a hub for thrill-seekers, party-goers, and marginalized individuals alike.
The area`s roots stretch back to 1828 when Governor Sir Ralph Darling subdivided Woolloomooloo Hill into large estates. These expansive mansions, surrounded by gardens, gave Kings Cross a distinctive leafy character, with street names like Roslyn, Orwell, and Kellett reflecting the grand homes that once dotted the area. However, as Sydney grew, most of these estates were subdivided,
and many mansions were demolished. One notable exception is Elizabeth Bay House, a preserved example of the early grandeur.
In 1905, the junction of Victoria Street, Darlinghurst Road, William Street, and Upper William Street was renamed Kings Cross, in honour of Queen Victoria’s jubilee. Over time, Kings Cross developed a unique reputation, becoming a centre of both sophistication and sleaze. The area attracted bohemian artists, writers, and musicians, who mingled with criminals and underworld figures. It became a haven for creative types, but by the 1920s and 1930s, the rise of razor gangs and organized crime introduced a darker side to the neighbourhood.
The era also saw the Cross become one of the most developed areas for flats in Sydney, transforming into a modern place for its time. Criminals like Phil `the Jew` Jeffs, as well as figures from the infamous rival crime syndicates of Tilly Devine and Kate Leigh, contributed to the area’s seedy reputation. Late-night venues, nightclubs, and illegal casinos flourished, cementing Kings Cross’s status as a hub of vice and crime.
After World War II, Kings Cross remained a popular hotspot, particularly for soldiers on leave. The streets were lined with cafes, restaurants, and nightclubs that offered soldiers and sailors a place to unwind before returning to the frontlines. As the 20th century progressed, Kings Cross also became associated with violence, homelessness, and addiction. In response, the Wayside Chapel, founded by Ted Noffs in 1964, began providing essential support to those in need.
